As the leading supplier of EV charging solutions in Denmark Clever delivers holistic EV charging solutions to both private and businesses and is currently expanding the biggest Danish public charging network adding new charging points every week.

Clever has been in the e-Mobility industry for more than a decade and it was time to explore the market for a new IoT connection provider as Clever's current solution no longer was able to meet all their technical and commercial requirements. This led to Clever choosing Cobira as their primary connectivity provider, delivering secure and scalable IoT connectivity to future electric vehicle charging stations as well as replacing the connectivity, on a large part of the current installed base of EV charging stations, with the solution from Cobira.

Solution

From Clever’s perspective, unreliable connectivity negatively affects the transition to sustainable E-Mobility and the commercial viability of their charging network. And if connectivity fails entirely, EV drivers’ concerns emerges immediately and payments cannot be processed, leading to a loss of revenue for the company.

Multiple network redundancy and enhanced coverage

Cobira delivers a connectivity solution that is able to use all 4 available mobile network operators in Denmark. With the ability for each EV charging station to automatically select the best available network at any given time, Clever has a high certainty of 24/7 availability, ensuring that payments can be processed and important data can be collected at any time.

Maximum flexibility with eSIM

The cost of physically changing SIM cards in an EV charging station is high and doing so in hundreds of thousands of devices is an almost impossible task. By choosing an eSIM-based solution Clever ensures that they have a GSMA standardized way to, at any time, change connectivity provider without actually physically changing the SIM cards in the EV charging stations. By using eSIM the change of provider can easily be done over-the-air and at a fraction of the cost of doing it manually.

Cobira provides Clever with a full M2M remote SIM provisioning service to manage all eSIM related tasks. Initially, the eSIM functionality is delivered on physical 2FF industrial-grade SIM cards, to align with the current state of the hardware in the EV charging stations. But in the near future, when the EV charging station suppliers shift to a chip-based eSIM solution, Clever is already prepared and will have no challenges managing the technology change.

Secure Edge-to-Cloud service

When Clever has IoT devices that provide a commercial service that customers pay for, security is of course absolutely crucial. With Secure Edge-to-cloud, Cobira ensures that Clever's IoT devices cannot be accessed on the public Internet.

Quality of connection metrics

Clever's EV charging stand solution is intended to always be online and it is therefore important that there is a good and stable mobile connection at the place where the device is located. If the connection is unstable, due to poor network coverage, it will result in a bad customer experience and potential loss of customers as a result. Cobira's Quality-of-Connection Monitoring can help determine if steps need to be taken to improve the network connection due to an unstable or weak signal.

GPS-less location services

It happens that errors occur in connection with the installer's registration of the device's installation address. In these cases, Cobira's smart SIM-based positioning can help determine where the device has been installed.
